Our Commercial Case Studies

Commercial Windows for Radcliffe Swimming Baths

Services provided: Windows supplied and installed for Radcliffe Swimming Baths

Radcliffe Glass & Windows was approached by Bury Council to install windows which would reduce the carbon footprint of Radcliffe Pool & Fitness Centre which in turn would save money on the energy bills.

The frame specification and choice was considered very carefully and the decision was made to use our platinum range Profile 22 window. The window is multi-chambered with thermal inserts used from recycled uPVC windows. This makes the window 100% recyclable and gives it an edge in the sustainability requirement for all local councils.

The installation was for more than 100 windows of various sizes and specification. With Radcliffe Swimming Baths being such a large contract, it was most likely the biggest window installation performed in one phase in the Radcliffe area in a long time. The installation of windows and doors was carried out for the entire building which contained the gymnasium, crèche, spectators’ gallery, poolside and changing rooms.

The specification incorporated white multi-chambered uPVC frames with Planitherm soft coat, argon filled toughened safety glass and black plastisol feature panels. Visit www.planitherm.com for more details.

The boiler room was also very shabby in appearance but structurally sound so we gave the outbuilding a new lease of life by cladding it in white uPVC.

The building fabric contained asbestos so installation was time consuming and difficult so as to ensure the safety of the general public and Radcliffe Glass & Windows staff members. The installation was completed to a high quality finish within schedule by the skilled craftsmen at Radcliffe Glass & Windows.

Planitherm glass for Wesley Methodist Primary School

Services: installation of windows for Wesley Methodist Primary School, Radcliffe

Radcliffe Glass & Windows was approached by Wesley Methodist Primary School to tender for a replacement programme of over 95% of the building’s windows and doors plus all of the cladding to the roof structure. The directive was to make the building safer for students and staff, aesthetically more attractive and thermally efficient. The project included bricking up the vast majority of windows to a height that matched the new extension windows which created a logistical problem with securing the building.

After much discussion with the headmaster, the contract was agreed and it had to be completed before the students returned from their holidays. The project had to be carried out along with a refurbishment of the heating system so a very detailed schedule of works was implemented and followed. It was decided to leave the existing windows in place whilst cutting them to size and building the brick walls. The windows and doors were then installed in phases to ensure the building was never left unsecure and was weatherproof at all times. The design of the windows and doors was sympathetic to the windows in the new extension but the specification and style was improved significantly. The doors were specified as composite doors which are much more reliable, secure and thermally efficient than the existing doors. In the assembly hall, which was traditionally very cold and dark, it was decided to introduce full glass doors and floor to ceiling glass panels which in turn have created a much lighter and warmer space.

The frames used were from Radcliffe Glass & Windows’ A-rated platinum range which are 100% recyclable, have very high thermal dynamics and are very reliable and secure. The Planitherm toughened safety glass was used for the vast majority of the building. However, on one particular elevation which was south facing, Celsius Solar control glass was used to reduce glare and uncomfortable solar gain. The entire school’s cladding was replaced in the school’s colour of blue which gave a new lease of life to a previously tired looking building. The project was completed on time in a very efficient manner and has already reduced condensation and the school’s once high energy bills.

Installation of sustainable windows for Bury Castle Leisure Centre

Services provided: Commercial window installation for Bury Council

Radcliffe Glass & Windows were approached to tender by Bury Council for a very large contract of replacing over 90% of the windows and doors of the Bury Castle Leisure Centre. The application process was very rigorous and began with ensuring that health and safety processes for the project could be achieved. The next important factors were to reduce the carbon footprint of the building and the high levels of condensation around the baby pool, large pool and diving pool.

Radcliffe Glass & Windows won the contract based on best value criteria with their platinum range which provides sustainable windows as standard. The frames are of the highest specification available in uPVC and have very high structural loading capacity. They look good, they are thermally efficient due to their multi-chambered construction and are sustainable as the frame is 100% recyclable. The frame’s thermal inserts are made from RCM (re-constituted material) which improves thermal dynamics, reduces condensation and because they are not made from galvanised steel, they do not rust, which is very important for such a high-moisture level atmosphere. The glass used in the installation was Planitherm toughened safety glass which coupled with the high specification frame and clever use of trickle vents created a condensation free environment by the poolside area which was very beneficial to staff and members of the public.

The major installation was completed within 2 weeks as per the schedule of works and although the Castle Leisure Centre is very busy, it was never closed throughout the installation and the general public did not face any inconvenience. The completed installation has been a terrific success with a drastic reduction in energy bills and condensation. Due to the use of white uPVC frames, the building has now reduced its maintenance requirements significantly whilst giving the once tired building a new lease of life.
