What is an Orangery?

We know that choosing the right glazed extension for your home is a big decision, and there is one question we get most often when people are looking at choosing an Orangery here at Radcliffe Glass & Windows and that is “What is the difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery?”. So here’s the answer:

Traditionally a Conservatory is a glass structure, with a brick base and a glazed roof. (However with advances in technology conservatories can now feature things such as fully glazed walls and a solid roof).

An Orangery is traditionally a brick structure with large windows and most often a flat roof with a glass lantern. (However again, as well as the traditional style there are now modern improvements, such as super insulated columns, pitched roofs and internal pelmets).

So now that’s out of the way take a look through our Orangery styles and our expert services.

Styles Of Orangery At Radcliffe Glass & Windows

The versatility of the Orangery structure allows you to convert the orangery into any room you want, from a home office to a kitchen with a fully bespoke design.

Traditional Glazed Roof Orangery

Lean-To Conservatories are simple and stream lined

Our traditional orangeries combine solid brick pillars, a performance glass roof and a range of traditional finishing touches. This option is the perfect way for you to bring a beautifully charming period look to your home. Combine a glazed roof, traditional brick piers and a decorative cornice to create the look orangeries are famous for. The insulated internal pelmet adds thermal efficiency and provides a useful place for lighting and speakers.

Modern Super Insulated Orangery

Classic Victorian Style Conservatories in Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire & Greater Manchester

Stylish contemporary orangeries have super-insulated columns that help to create an orangery style design for your home, ensuring maximum comfort all year round. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the insulated columns are five times more thermally efficient than brick, made of enriched expanded polystyrene and styropor carbon.

Additionally compared to brick piers of the same size, super-insulated columns are simpler to install, making this style of orangery a particularly good alternative to an extension. Your glazed roof will rest on top of the columns, enabling a range of build options from double-hipped, T-Shape, or decorative Georgian designs.

Edwardian Conservatories

Edwardian conservatories Allow For Optimum Interior Floor Space

Lantern orangeries use a lantern roof light to sit on a flat roof or deck. This floods your home with natural light, creating a stunning focal point of your home. Operating as a cutting-edge home improvement solution, these orangeries are a high-performance choice for any home. A traditionally built design featuring the Ultrasky lantern comprises an elegant 25° pitch designed to flood your home with light, the Ultrasky lantern creates a focal point be it over a table or kitchen island. Prefix Systems offer a range of traditional style orangeries, bespoke to suit your tastes and requirements. The traditional lantern orangery is made with a glazed lantern roof which provides simplicity and elegance to any home. You can choose a single lantern glass roof or a double lantern on larger projects.

Internal Pelmet Features

The internal ceiling pelmet sits around the perimeter of the room, giving the illusion of a flat roof with a lantern roof on top from the inside. As the pelmet can also be insulated, it provides more than just decorative value. It will also stop convection currents and keep your new room warm with its fully insulated cavity. With a plastered finish the pelmet can provide the perfect place to install spotlights and speakers to really enhance the room.

  • Includes a horizontal soffit in the extension
  • Option to infill with mineral wool insulation
  • Can incorporate spotlights and down-lights
  • Can incorporate speakers
  • Variable depth from 300-1200mm
