What is an Orangery?

We know that choosing the right glazed extension for your home is a big decision, and there is one question we get most often when people are looking at choosing an Orangery here at RADGAW and that is “What is the difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery?”. So here’s the answer:

Traditionally a Conservatory is a glass structure, with a brick base and a glazed roof. (However with advances in technology conservatories can now feature things such as fully glazed walls and a solid roof).

An Orangery is traditionally a brick structure with large windows and most often a flat roof with a glass lantern. (However again, as well as the traditional style there are now modern improvements, such as super insulated columns, pitched roofs and internal pelmets).

So now that’s out of the way take a look through our Orangery styles and our expert services.

Traditional Glazed Roof Orangery

Lean-To Conservatories are simple and stream lined

Our traditional orangeries combine solid brick pillars, a performance glass roof and a range of traditional finishing touches. This option is the perfect way for you to bring a beautifully charming period look to your home. Combine a glazed roof, traditional brick piers and a decorative cornice to create the look orangeries are famous for. The insulated internal pelmet adds thermal efficiency and provides a useful place for lighting and speakers.

Internal Pelmet Features

The internal ceiling pelmet sits around the perimeter of the room, giving the illusion of a flat roof with a lantern roof on top from the inside. As the pelmet can also be insulated, it provides more than just decorative value. It will also stop convection currents and keep your new room warm with its fully insulated cavity. With a plastered finish the pelmet can provide the perfect place to install spotlights and speakers to really enhance the room.

  • Includes a horizontal soffit in the extension
  • Option to infill with mineral wool insulation
  • Can incorporate spotlights and down-lights
  • Can incorporate speakers
  • Variable depth from 300-1200mm
